There are several reasons why a thermostat might not be keeping up with an air conditioner (AC), including:
Dirty air filter: A clogged air filter can prevent air from circulating through the vents and ducts, making it difficult for the AC to reach the thermostat's set temperature. This can also cause the AC to overheat and trip the circuit breaker. To prevent this, you can replace your air filters regularly.
Dirty vents and ducts: Dust and debris in the vents and ducts can also block airflow, making it harder for the AC to reach the desired temperature. You can wash the vents and have a licensed HVAC specialist clean the ducts.
Faulty thermostat: A faulty thermostat might keep the AC from turning on or might keep it running regardless of the temperature. It could also be mis calibrated or wearing out.
Refrigerant leak: If the AC is low on refrigerant, it might have trouble maintaining the thermostat's temperature.
Incorrect thermostat settings: For example, if the AC fan is set to "ON," it will blow constantly, even when the air isn't being cooled.
Tripped circuit breaker: Power outages or surges can cause the AC's circuit to trip, which can make the thermostat unresponsive. You can check the circuit breaker box in your home to see if this is the issue.
